How to Care for an Oriental Rug

Oriental rugs can survive centuries in good condition if given proper care and treatment. Their enemies are dirt, improper washing, prolonged dampness and insects like moths, mites and silverfish. The dirt and stains can be handled with regular maintenance, professional cleaning and informed emergency care. The problems associated with moisture or insects are the result of location in humid or damp environments or as a result of improper storage or care. This type of problem can be avoided through forethought and preparation to include having your rugs professionally wrapped and Moth-Proofed. Moth-proofing is only usefully if wrapped and stored.

Vacuum Regularly

Oriental rugs should be vacuumed approximately once per week whether they are in a high traffic area or not. Be careful when vacuuming not to catch the fringe with the high speed brushes. These edges are usually the first area requiring restoration because they are susceptible to accelerated wear from foot traffic as well as vacuum damage.
